Welcome to Roberts Middle School for the 2020-2021 school year. My name is Kris Gaijer and I am the principal of this fantastic school. As I enter my third year here at Roberts and 13th year in Cuyahoga Falls City Schools, all I can say is “Wow this is different!”. From the time I wrote this letter last school year to today, education in America has evolved tremendously due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This has brought significant changes to a student’s school experience from being in person to now learning virtually with the use of technology. We know this is not ideal, but it is safe and it allows us to ensure teaching and learning continues. Although school will look different, we will persevere as we look forward to the days when our students are able to come back to school in person. In the meantime, work has continued to ensure more flexible classroom space, ensuring a study hall or tutoring period for each student, and ensuring each student has the technology needed to succeed. In addition to this work, we will continue to expand our student led opportunities to service our community through our Interact Club, National Junior Honor Society, Builders’ Club, Gay Straight Alliance, STAND, and TigerVoice.
For those who are new to our community, we are a small school of roughly 450 students in grades 6, 7, and 8 tucked away just behind Route 8 in a quiet cul-de-sac. Our students are drawn from our local communities including Peninsula, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, and Akron. We are very proud of our students and their love for our school. In my time working with these students, parents, and staff it has become clear that we truly are a Black Tiger family!
At Roberts, we try to use our time as effectively as possible. Our school day begins at 8:00am with doors opening at 7:55am and the final bell ringing at 2:50. We ask that car riders be dropped off in the rear parking lot to ensure safety in the front area for our 6th graders waiting to come into the building. We also ask that the front lot of the building remain free of traffic between 7:30-8:00am and 2:30-3:15pm so that buses can drop off and pick up on time.
Roberts Middle School is an active place of learning where we address the needs of every student. Our continued goal is to help our students become independent and thoughtful participants in their own education. We focus on pushing our students to excel while teaching them to persevere when things get hard. With the commitment of the Cuyahoga Falls City School District Board of Education to the integration of technology into our curriculum and classrooms, the Roberts staff has established an education model that utilizes technology in ways that foster this independence and ownership of student work on a daily basis.
As members of the Suburban League Conference, in collaboration with Bolich Middle School, our students participate in football, girls and boys cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, wrestling, and track. We also have intramural sports throughout the school year. Our students also participate in a variety of academic clubs including Robotics Club and The Reading and Writing Festival. Our middle school bands and choirs perform concerts throughout the year for our Black Tiger Community!
I welcome you to Roberts Middle School where we work hard everyday to maximize our Black Tiger Pride!
Let’s get to work!
